Two Windows Where Epigenetics Matters Most

Epigenetic patterns aren't set at birth. They shift across two key windows in reproduction.

The first is while eggs and sperm are maturing, well before fertilization. Age, health conditions, and environment all leave marks here over years.

The second is in the days right after fertilization, when the embryo largely erases its inherited epigenetic marks and re-establishes its own. This is a fast, tightly timed process — and it happens to overlap almost exactly with the days an embryo spends in an IVF lab: fertilization, culture, and transfer.

Why the Lab Environment Is Part of This Conversation

During natural conception, this reprogramming window happens inside the body. During IVF, it happens in a dish, under lab-controlled conditions — temperature, CO2 levels, pH, and the composition of the culture medium itself.

Researchers have found that maintaining normal methylation patterns during this window depends on nutrients called methyl donors, which some standard lab culture systems don't fully replicate compared to the natural reproductive tract. This is an active area of research, not a settled problem — and it's part of why embryology labs invest heavily in culture protocols and quality control rather than treating culture medium as interchangeable.

Reassuringly, direct comparisons of different clinically-used culture media have found no significant differences in the resulting methylation patterns of IVF-conceived babies, including at the specific genes involved in growth and imprinting disorders. These disorders are rare to begin with; a multiple of a very small number is still a small number.
